OBJECTIVE: To learn what is Number System and its Types.

Number System:

Number system in digital electronics is used for representing the information in digital electronics. It has different bases and the most common of them is the Decimals, Binary, Octal, and Hexadecimal. The ‘Base’ which is also called ‘Radix’ is the total number of the Digits used in the system.

Types of Number System in digital electronics:

1. Binary
2. Decimal
3. Octal
4. Hexadecimal

1. Binary:

Modern computers do not use a decimal number instead they work with another system known as a binary system which uses only two digits i.e., 0 and1. The base of the binary is 2 because it consists of only two-digit 0 and 1. The digital electronic circuits work only on the binary system and hence the decimal system is converted to a binary system.
In the binary system, the base value is ‘2’.
The base is also called as Radix (r). So, let us assume the base as ‘r’.
So here, r=2.
The maximum digits in binary system = r-1
= 2-1
= 1
The different symbols used in binary number system are 0 to 1 (0,1).

2. Octal:

The base of a number system is equal to the number of digits used, i.e., for the decimal number system the base is ’10’ while for the binary system the base is ‘2’. Similarly, the octal has the base of ‘8’ as it uses eight digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
In the octal system, the base value is ‘8’.
So here, r=8.
The maximum digits in octal system = r-1
= 8-1
= 7
The different symbols used in octal system are 0 to 7 (0,1…….7).

3. Decimal:

The system having digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 is known as a decimal because a total of ten digits is involved. In the decimal, the base value is ’10’.
So here, r=10.
The maximum digits in decimal system = r-1
= 10-1
= 9
The different symbols used in the decimal system are 0 to 9 (0,1…….9).

4. Hexadecimal:

In the hexadecimal, the base value is ’16’.
So here, r=16.
The maximum digits in decimal system = r-1
= 16-1
= 15
The different symbols used in Hexadecimal system are 0 to F (0,1,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A,B,C,D,E,F).
